Indonexia.com The Truly Indonesia

When exactly is Hari Raya celebrated in Indonesia in October 2007 and what are the worst days to travel then?

I will be travelling in Indonesia, specifically Jakarta and the rest of Java, in mid-October. I will be taking planes and buses. I hear there is a week long Hari Raya holiday then. If I need to travel, which days should I avoid because of peak domestic traffic? Which day is busier, October 12 or October 13th 2007? Thank you.

  2. Hari Raya Idul Fitri is what the Moslems celebrated after Ramadhan fasting month. It's the biggest holiday season in Indonesia, since majority of citizens are Moslem. The date of Hari Raya is changing every Gregorian calendar, as a result of conversion of Moslem calendar of Hijr. In 2007, Idul Fitri falls on 13 Oct. Govt give the people another break on 14 Oct. Before the Bali bombing, the holiday is only for 2 days. But to boost the tourism (local/int'l), the govt give 'Mass Leave' policy to lengthen the holiday period. The Mass Leave to this year Idul Fitri falls on 12 Oct, 15 Oct, and 16 Oct. Those whole 5 days shall be the busiest traffic outside Jakarta. Jakarta itself, as where urban people live, is being 'left empty' because most of its people are fleeing back home to their village/family roots. I suggest you stay in Jakarta during the Idul Fitri season. You could start to get to another cities after 15 Oct. Have a nice visit to Indonesia! :) :)
