Is it safe for a girl to travel alone in Indonesia right now?

I'm flying into Singapore in May then wanted to head into Indonesia - possibly also into Borneo. Has anyone been there recently or lives there now to give me any tips for places to go to/ avoid at this time? Am I safe to be travelling alone?

  4. No is the obvious answer. It's risky travelling anywhere on your own nowadays, my friend has just come back from Borneo and from what she's told me I wouldn't consider it at all.
  5. i dont suggest it. but you can look under your country' Travel Warning list if you want to make sure. US has one.

  7. it depends on the age
  8. No you aren't gonna be safe now that you've ANNOUNCED TO WHATEVER CREEPS MAY BE ON HERE THAT YOU WILL BE IN INDONESIA IN MAY. Sorry sister, you're out of your mind if you think everybody on here is a nice mimsy person. There are some freaks out there hon, and you cannot go announcing where you'll be and when.
  9. A girl isn't safe walking down her own road alone these days!
  10. A girl is NOT SAFE traveling alone anywhere in this world. There's a lot of bad people out there that want to do bad things to you...don't give them the opportunity. DO NOT TRAVEL ALONE! That should be clear, precise and to the point.
  11. Go to Thailand instead

  15. in java, you are save! in sumatra, generally save nowadays in borneo, don't use river, pirates everywhere. why don't you just go to batam or riau province, it just one hour by ship from singapore. it completely save in tourist areas in indonesia.
  16. I insist you go with a company of female travellers.
  17. Not safe for a girl/women to travel alone in indonesia and many agreed it is not safe. Some palce also not save to travel even guy/ men to travel alone. unless you look local to them
  18. I am an Indonesian girl and even I don't dare to travel alone... My mum insists that I use never use public transports and as far as possible go with at least a friend everywhere I go. Whether it's safe or not, it really depends on how much you stand out from the rest, i.e whether you're a Caucasian/Chinese, how many jewelries you wear, etc etc. But generally, nope it's not safe at all and I can testify for that. Thank goodness I'm in Singapore right now.. Can really feel the difference of being in Indonesia and somewhere else. You feel very insecure there and you have to watch your back every second.
  19. yes

  21. Hi, it can be fine to visit part of Indonesia if you like. Better if you have a guide to travel around. There was a fellow poster on Yahoo Answer who offer to show traveller around Medan in Sumatra. If you like, I can connect you with her for your stay there. As for other parts of Indonesia, I frankly would not advise traveling alone. It will be better to travel with company. If you are heading to Borneo, go to Sabah. There you can backpack alone. Should be ok. You can visit the native village or the beaches and islands. How about traveling to Thailand from Singapore? Do consider. Budget flight is not too expensive nowadays, about S$200 return or less if booked early or during promotion. You can head to Chiangmai and do mountain trek and hilltribe village visit too.
