Can you play a PS2 game online against a PS3 game?

Lets say I have a PS2 with MLB 2K8 on it... and my friend has a PS3 with a the same game, just for PS3 instead of PS2. Would it still be possible to play eachother online?

1. i dont think thats possible because they are on different platforms. its like saying a 360 can play against a regular old XBOX
