What is a good, free, online, multiplayer game to play with another friend (in different state)?

My friend and I live in different states, but we want to play some game online together. Know any good games we can do, anything multiplayer playing against each other or on a team, etc, when we're not at the same computer? XD Seeing as we're several states away....we did iSketch for a while, but got bored; we preferably want a 2-player multi game where you can play with another person online across the nation. Thanks!

So if you want a lot of stuff but don't wanna pay real life money, its really limited.

3. if ur a shooter kidna person id suggest SWAT 4, it is fun and has Co-op so u can pleh together. Half life is fun too. But if u like fantasy stuff id suggest something like Diablo For rts, u HAFTA GET COMPANY OF HEROES oh, if u want to play on a virtue lan network, (no-lag!) get hamachi.
4. I would suggest runescape. It's pretty fun, you can play with anyone you want. You can play for free or pay $5 a month for members. Members get way more quests, weapons, armour, and stuff like that. If you do play, you want to make sure you and your friend are in the same "world". There are like 130 worlds, so make sure you both go into the same one.
