Indonesian food unpopular in the US?

I see a lot of Thai, vietnamese, chinese restaurant in the US. But not too many Indonesian restaurant. Anybody have an ideas why that is? Is the type of food not popular, or perhaps unfamiliar to most people but conisdering that Indonesia is the 4th most populous country, is that likely?

  2. It is just unfamiliar to me here in U.S.A. but i would try it! I don't have any recipes nor know of a restaurant.
  3. Most Americans haven't been exposed to Indonesian food, or if they have, they may not be aware of it's origin. If you have a talent for making Indonesian dishes, you might want to look into starting up an Indonesian restaurant. With the right decor and atmosphere, you could do well, especially if you can get a liquor license!
  4. Indonesian Food is predominantly "malay" in origin; unfortunately it is an acquired taste without a universal appeal. There are only a handful of Indonesian restaurants combined even in neighbouring Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei - shows it is not popular. It would be truly surprising if Americans take a liking to it.
  5. Indonesian food is unpopular anywhere else, except in Holland since there are so many Indonesians there ;)
  6. ohh my gosh, i live in new york, and i know about like ONE indonesian restaurant. i really wish there were more though :(
