Are food riots in Haiti the start of a disturbing trend?
Analysts have predicted that rising food costs would cause civil unrest, starting in the very least developed countries and progressively moving along to more developed countries. As most know Haiti is one of the least developed nations in the world.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080409/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/haiti_food_protests Food riots have also been reported this year in Mexico, India, Morocco, Egypt, China, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Yemen, Guinea, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Senegal. Is this a disturbing trend? What the heck does global warming theory have to do with food prices? My god man, I know you aren't that bright but you are taking the cake here. None of the countries mention staple food crop is corn, or are in area where corns is a viable food crop. The staples of all the countries listed are either Rice, Wheat, or localized staple grains.

- Yes, people fight to survive and food is needed for survival ...so sad to say this may just be the tip of a very huge iceberg
- This is very disturbing. I wasn't aware it was going on.
- When you wrongfully physically remove a democratically elected President as the Bush Administration did, and send him to Africa, there is no hope or protections. Haiti remains the place for near slave labor and food is scarce. The US corporate seed industry involving forced purchases of seeds and pesticides that don't work, coupled with erratic weather conditions caused by man made conditions has created problems for the rest of the world.
- I think this will continue for awhile and who knows how long or how severe things will get. Some analysts are predicting at least a decade or so for food prices to come down but hopefully that's a very high estimate. Time magazine did a pretty good piece on it.
- How in the hell can they be a food shortage on an island so rich in resources. It's an island so you can fish at anytime 24/7, it has an abundance of naturally grown fruits and vegetables. The real problem is the food is being hoarded by the government , there is no fking food shortage. It's a people problem as usual not a nature problem. Corrupt government officials hoarding the food for their army and friends and purposely starving the rest of the population.
- "Soilent Green is People!" I figure USA will bail out Haiti. Which will increase the birth rate which will make it worse. But has anyone noticed that there is no rioting on the other half of the island Dominican Republic? It has managed its land better. Much less deforested. Much less corrupt political leadership.
